Here's some further explanation:
- I realize that making the world's networks more secure can make the world a better place. Computers run our world, and we need them in order to do even the most basic things in life.
- Day-to-day work of enhancing network security isn't enough for me. I want to have a bigger impact.
- I don't want to sit in a room with a "working group" and talk about ways to make the world better, I want to actually do hands-on work to make a difference.

Maybe you should see about getting involved with the EFF. They have a "bigger" impact (or at least try aim for that).
I suggest you man up and start changing the world already :) Maybe you can start by washing my car.
On a serious note. Changing the world takes more than a day man. I'd suggest hanging in there and doing the good fight.
Ever thought about Hackers for Charity?

I've wrestled with some of the same questions... and I believe you might struggle to find fulfillment without first answering why you "should" make the world a better place! :-) I think you're right to come to that conclusion, or at least to be naturally and strongly drawn to that idea. But why should you?
